Kicking off a series of retrospective looks at some of the best stories in science fiction, Colin talks about the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode, The Visitor.
Before Ron Moore brought us Battlestar Galactica, he was a producer on what is now widely considered one of the best Trek spin-offs - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. As a series it broke away from what we knew as Trek and gave us something darker, grittier and far more involving. After a few years, the show really hit its stride and with Season 4 really kicked into top gear. The season opener, Way of the Warrior unfortunately overshadowed one of the series true gems - after the wonderful bombastic opening to the season we had a much lower key and personal story.

The UK debut of new Stargate spin-off, Stargate Universe was a resounding ratings success with 865,000 viewers tuning in for the two hour premier. That's a 4% audience share and the best viewing figures for a Stargate series in half a decade, doubling the numbers that Stargate: Atlantis brought in.

ITV's attempt to capture some of the Doctor Who market has been cancelled after three series. Having improved greatly over the course of it's short life, Primeval ended the third series with a pretty sizable cliffhanger which now looks unlikely to be resolved.
It appears falling viewer numbers and advertising revenue have taken their toll on the series and a last-minute attempt at funding the show through a new broadcast partner has failed leaving both the future of TV show in doubt and huge question marks over the previously announced feature film.

Karen Gillan has been revealed as the Doctor's companion when the Doctor Who returns for its fifth season in 2010. She joins Matt Smith who is taking over from David Tennant once he hands over the keys to the Tardis at the end of the year.
Gillan, 21, has previously had a guest part in the Pompeii-set series four episode, 'The Fires of Pompeii' in which she played a soothsayer predicting hard times ahead.
Piers Wenger, Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, said 'We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special.'
The fifth series will be one of the most important to the flagship BBC drama since its return to our screens with not only a new Doctor and companion, but a new producer in the shape of Steven Moffat taking over the reigns from Russell T Davies.
Given Moffat's track record as a writer on the series, here at The Medusa Cascade, we're cautiously optimistic on the show's future...
